Shawnee Mission fifth grade students honored American Heroes on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, in an assembly at Shawnee Mission South High School. Students dressed in costume spoke about the lives of presidents, civil rights leaders, scientists, explorers and others who have made a difference in the world. More than 2,000 youngsters took part in the televised event which is the culmination of several weeks of classroom study about the qualities of heroes.
